Beaches on watch for box jellyfish

The city Ocean Safety Division is warning beachgoers about a "light influx" of box jellyfish that may appear through tomorrow.

Lifeguards had not reported any stings yesterday afternoon, and the jellyfish have been sighted only at Kuhio Beach so far, a spokesman said.

However, the periodic appearances of the jellyfish commonly affect Ala Moana, Hanauma, Poka'i Bay and Makaha beaches.

A person who suffers a box jellyfish sting is advised to flush the area with white vinegar. Those who experience difficulty breathing, cramps, spasms or persistent pain are urged to seek medical attention. Lifeguard stations are equipped to provide first aid.
