State monitors city sewer work

Possible enforcement action against the city is being considered over a sewer leak into a ditch near Hulakai Place in Kane'ohe that the state Department of Health said it first learned about in November 2000.

The city said it will start repair work on the leak today and should have the entire line renovated by the end of the week.

Yesterday, the city issued a public warning against contact with the drainage ditch and the point where it empties into Kane'ohe Bay.

A crew had checked for possible leaks after obtaining higher than normal levels of bacterial counts at the ditch, said Tim Steinberger, director of the city's environmental services.

"They estimated that less than five gallons a day was seeping out," Steinberger said.

Department of Health spokeswoman Janice Okubo said the state has been working with the city on this problem for a long time and is not satisfied with the city's action. The state has asked for a new time line and correction plan.

"We are pursuing possible enforcement action in this case," Okubo said.

June 'Brunch' pushed back

The popular "Brunch on the Beach," generally held on the second Sunday of each month, will move to the fourth Sunday — June 23 — this month.

The date change accommodates another scheduled event in Waikiki, and "Brunch" will return to the second Sunday in July and August, said Kayleen Polichietti, vice president of the Waikiki Improvement Association.

Launched last July, "Brunch on the Beach" transforms a two-block stretch of Kalakaua Avenue into an outdoor cafe of food vendors and free musical entertainment. The city also offers "Sunset on the Beach" at Queen's Surf Beach every Saturday and Sunday, which features movies on a 30-foot screen.

For information call 523-CITY or the Waikiki Improvement Association at 923-1094.
