Woman awakes to burglaryA 25-year-old man remained in police custody this morning, pending burglary and auto theft charges, after a Kailua woman awoke early yesterday to feed her newborn and discovered a man ransacking her kitchen.
The suspect, who has no local address, allegedly was going through the kitchen drawers and cabinets in the Kalaheo Avenue home when he was found.
He then allegedly fled in a white minivan that, according to the 28-year-old victim, was idling in front of the house.
An all-points bulletin led to his arrest in Waimanalo, police said, after he abandoned the van that had been reported stolen and was seen entering a 7-Eleven store.
Moped owner catches thief
A downtown worker headed for home yesterday was stunned first to see his moped had been stolen and then, moments later, to chase down the suspect after spotting him riding it down the street.
The male employee, 31, was leaving his office at about 6:10 p.m. and saw a teenager astride the stolen moped. The 13-year-old suspect allegedly stopped for a red light at the intersection of Alakea and Hotel streets, giving the victim time to run up to the boy and hold him for police. The boy has been released pending further investigation.
H-1 slowed by 5-car crash
A five-car accident this morning slowed morning rush-hour traffic to a crawl in the ewa-bound lanes of the H-1 Freeway, near the Ka'onohi Street overpass.
Details on how the accident happened were unavailable at about 8:30 a.m., when both ambulance and fire crews were called. Two people with minor injuries were taken to Pali Momi Medical Center, ambulance officials said.
