Hawaiian-language journal published

Advertiser Staff

A new journal is out that perpetuates Hawaiian history and culture and also serves as an educational resource.

"Ka Ho'oilina: Puke Pai 'Olelo Hawai'i — The Legacy: Journal of Hawaiian Language Sources," is published by Kamehameha Schools, Alu Like Inc. and the University of Hawai'i.

The journal, released yesterday, was developed by Alu Like's Hawaiian Language Legacy Program and draws from 19th and 20th century documents, including Mary Kawena Puku'i's Hawaiian Ethnological Notes, government documents, Hawaiian-language newspapers, chants, stories and other literature.

The book's format makes it easily understandable to readers with minimal knowledge of the Hawaiian language, a spokesman for Kamehameha Schools said. The book features four parallel columns with Hawaiian writings in their original spelling, the same text in modern Hawaiian spelling, an English translation and annotations.

Copies of the journal are available from Kamehameha Schools Press, 1887 Makuakane St., Honolulu, HI 96817; or through the Journals Department, University of Hawai'i Press, 2840 Kolowalu St., Honolulu, HI 96822.
