Wai'anae's Tokunaga retires as baseball coach

Advertiser Staff

Wai'anae High School's Glenn Tokunaga, honored by his peers as divisional coach of the year this season, announced his retirement from coaching yesterday.

Tokunaga, 42, will remain at Wai'anae as head of the school's counseling department and assistant athletic director. He has been with the Seariders' baseball program for 17 years, the last five as head coach.

Wai'anae won the O'ahu Interscholastic Association championship in 1998, Tokunaga's first year as head coach, and the OIA's Western Division this year. He was selected Western Division Coach of the Year.

His '98 team finished third in the state. As head coach, Tokunaga had a 47-16 record in regular- and post-season play.

Tokunaga is a 1977 graduate of 'Aiea High, where he was a teammate of Derek Tatsuno on the 1976 state championship team, and a 1982 graduate of University of Hawai'i.

"I plan to spend a lot more time with wife (the former Daena Toyooka) and my two boys (Tyler and Tanner), who are just getting into baseball," Tokunaga said. He also has a daughter, Daelenn.
