Woman drowns at Hanauma Bay

A 58-year-old woman died in an apparent drowning yesterday at Hanauma Bay.

The woman, a visitor from Florida, was found floating in about four feet of water shortly before 11:30 a.m. The woman was pulled out of the water by lifeguards, who began CPR, police said.

The woman was taken to The Queen's Medical Center, but she was pronounced dead at 12:17 p.m. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

Fires damage 2 Maui homes

Maui County firefighters responded to fire calls at two homes yesterday.

The first occurred at 1:43 p.m. at a duplex on Kupele Place in Napili when a kitchen in one of the units caught fire. The occupants evacuated the home, and a neighbor used a garden hose to douse the flames before firefighters arrived.

Capt. Rick Beerman estimated damage at $3,000. He said the cause of the fire was undetermined.

Firefighters in Kihei responded to a 3:25 p.m. blaze at a home on Laumakani Loop in the Meadowlands subdivision. Capt. Ben Bland said the fire started on the back porch and burned through into a bedroom. A neighbor reported the fire and alerted a grandmother and infant who were upstairs in the home.

Firefighters put out the flames in about 10 minutes. Bland estimated damage at $5,500. He said the fire appears to have been intentionally set, but the exact cause is under investigation.

Beach 'Sunset' this weekend

"Sunset on the Beach" kicks off the Kamehameha Day weekend tomorrow and Sunday at 4 p.m. at Queen's Surf Beach with live entertainment, food and movies on a 30-foot screen.

Tomorrow's "Sunset" will feature the comedy sci-fi film "Men in Black." On Sunday, the feature will be the comedy "Mrs. Doubtfire." The movies begin at 7 p.m.

More parking is available Sunday at Ala Wai School, Jefferson Elementary and the Honolulu Zoo, because the Pan-Pacific Matsuri Parade will close Kalakaua Avenue from 5 to 8 p.m.

Panel to discuss waterways plan

The Kailua Waterways Improvement Program will hold its first public meeting at 6:30 p.m. June 26 in the 'Aikahi Elementary School cafeteria.

The panel will discuss developing a cleanup plan for the Kailua waterways system and solicit potential members for an advisory stakeholders group that will rank water quality issues and help develop cleanup strategies.

Look-alike event for dads, kids

The Hawai'i Coalition for Dads will sponsor a father/ child look-alike contest tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Pearlridge Center-Uptown at the Celebrating Fathers Festival.

Any father-figure and child entrants are welcome. First-place winners will receive tickets for four to Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park.

The festival, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will feature games for children and families, and entertainers Jesse Rivera, Centre Stage, Fool Around Kine and magician Glen Bailey.
