Saturday Scoops

Advertiser Staff

When the weekend finally — finally! — comes, you're trying to make the most of every minute.

That's where Saturday Scoops comes in.

We'll give you the skinny on the best places to take a date or entertain the family. Find ideas here to jazz up meals, beautify your home and make chores easier.

Manoa Falls: A fun walk with the kids

While we're waxing enthusiastic about Bruce Willis, we may as well give him and his film crew one more round of credit for helping to prep Manoa Falls for public viewing. After a Feb. 1 landslide sent tons of rocks and debris crashing 600 feet to the foot of the falls, the trail reopened ahead of schedule last month after "Hostile Rescue" producers donated use of their helicopter to fly workers, equipment and materials into the back of Manoa Valley.

There's a new viewing area, about 40 feet from the falls, with a good view of the waterfall.

State officials have now pronounced the shady, pleasant trail safe again for family walks.

Out of town guests

Newbies and long-timers alike can enjoy the entwined tributes to King Kamehameha I and the island tradition of lei-making contained in the King Kamehameha Floral Parade. The procession, with pa'u riders and marching bands, begins at 9:30 a.m. today at 'Iolani Palace, proceeds past the Kamehameha statue, winds down Punchbowl Street to Ala Moana, and heads for Kalakaua Avenue to wind up at Kapi'olani Park.

Home-style eats: Go coastal

Looking for a way to spark your salad? Toss in sun-dried tomatoes, strawberries and red onion slivers for a California flair, along with the nutritional advantages added by these fruits and vegetables.

Hot date

Bruce Willis, in town to film the adventure film "Hostile Rescue," brings his Achievers to the Pipeline Cafe at 8 tonight for a show that promises to be full of bluster and blues. Willis deejayed a surprise club night at the Turtle Bay Resort lounge last month, revealing a soft touch for modern R&B, so maybe we'll hear some of that too. Tickets bought today are $27.50. 585-2877.

Matsuri in Hawai'i

Saturate the senses with culture, color and sound at the 23rd Pan-Pacific Festival Matsuri in Hawai'i. The wide array of events, staged at various locations by 3,000 musicians, dancers and artists from Japan, continues through Monday. On tap: a Japan-Korea concert, 1-4:30 p.m.today at the Hawai'i Theatre ($12); a parade, 5-7 p.m. tomorrow along Kalakaua Avenue; and the Matsuri Moonlight Finale, in conjunction with the Aston Full Moon concert, 4:30 p.m. tomorrow at Kapi'olani Park (free). 926-8177.

Night on the town

Folks have nicknamed this the "Tiny Concert," but the lineup at tonight's The Road Runner Tiny Celebration (named for Tiny Tadani) is anything but: Sistah Robi Kahakalau, The Mana'o Company, Justin, Ernie Cruz Jr., Vaihi, DisGuyz, Tani Lynn Fujimoto, Soul Free, Sean Na'auao, Ilona Irvine — and the list goes on and on.

How to squeeze in so much entertainment when the show runs just 6 to 9 p.m. tonight at the Waikiki Shell, $20 pool, $18 terrace, $12 lawn. 526-4400.
