Interest in attending the University of Hawai'i at Manoa has increased dramatically.

As of Monday's application deadline, nearly 9,200 new and transferring students had applied for admission, a 23 percent increase over last year, university officials said yesterday.

Meanwhile, 3,051 students accepted offers of admission and paid a deposit on their tuition, an increase of 6.9 percent, they said.

"Naturally we're delighted with this increased interest in UH-Manoa," interim chancellor Deane Neubauer said.

"We're seeing the results of more aggressive student recruitment and a recognition among Hawai'i's high school graduates that UH offers top quality at an affordable price."

Overall undergraduate enrollment at Manoa increased 2.6 percent last year over the previous year as the number of new and transfer students increased about 8 percent. "We expect this trend to continue with the new school year," Neubauer said.
