ANIMAL COMPANIONS
Protecting your kitty from potential hazards

• Love-a-Cat Month
• PetWalk 2001

Hawaiian Humane Society

Most people who have a dog would never dream of letting their pooch roam the streets alone.

Yet some pet owners believe that cats are "free spirits" and should be allowed to come and go as they please.

But what's really best for cats is a combination of indoor and outdoor experiences.

Cats live three times longer when kept indoors. They are protected from the hazards of traffic, poisons and other animals.

During June, which is Love-a-Cat Month, the Hawaiian Humane Society invites you to stop by and see how cats may be kept safe at home, yet allowed to experience the thrill of the outdoors.

For example, buy or build an enclosed playhouse outdoors.

Your cat will experience the fun of being outside without all the dangers.

Or consider a "cat fence" as a way to enclose your yard for safe play.

If you can't build outside, bring some of the fun inside with a kitty condo or climbing tree. Install a perch near a window with a view of a bird feeder.

Building plans and information on items to keep your cat safe are available at the humane society. Call 946-2197, ext. 223.

Love-a-Cat Month

In June at the Hawaiian Humane Society:

  • • Each kitten or cat adopted comes with a free three-pound bag of Nutro food, a month of free flea repellant, a microchip ID and a cat carrier. The cats will already be sterilized and vaccinated.
  • • The $50 adoption fee is good for two cats or kittens.
  • • A sample cat playhouse, with directions and a materials list, provided by Home Depot Pearl City, will be on display.
