On the Big Island

Cowboy commotion: Hawai'i cowboys (paniolo) will gather for the 40th year on July 4 to celebrate Parker Ranch's Fourth of July Horse Races and Rodeo. The 40th anniversary Independence Day tradition will be held at the Parker Ranch Rodeo Arena in Waimea, entertaining visitors and residents alike with rodeo events, horse races, festival food and more.

The celebration kicks off at 9 a.m. with a grand entry parade spotlighting retired Parker Ranch employees. Then, paniolo from Parker Ranch, as well as 10 other Big Island ranches, jump into action competing against each other in a bounty of traditional rodeo events, including relay horse races, team-sorting, double mugging, dally team roping and more.

Children can participate in pony rides and a petting zoo. The action concludes at high noon. Cost is $5 per person.

Parker Ranch rodeo grounds are 37 miles by car from Kona and 57 miles from Hilo on Highway 190. Information: (808) 885-2303, www.parkerranch.com.
