Metzger, Wong advance to semifinal

HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. — The top-seeded team of Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong advanced to the semifinals of the Hermosa Beach Open yesterday.

Metzger and Wong are both Punahou School graduates.

Three-time Olympic gold medalist Karch Kiraly and partner Brent Doble also advanced by upsetting the No. 2 team Eric Fonoimana and Dax Holdren, 19-21, 21-19, 15-12.

The other semifinalists are the team of Scott Ayakatubby and Brian Lewis, and the team of Albert Hannemann and Jeff Nygaard.

In women's play, the No. 1 team of Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs advanced, as did the second seeds Dianne Denecochea and Barbra Fontana. Other semifinalists include Carrie Busch and Leanne Schuster, and the Olympians Annet Davis and Jennifer Johnson-Jordan.
