Hawai'i arena football team loses 9th in row

Advertiser Staff

Walt Church completed 22-of-30 passes for 340 yards and seven touchdowns as the Peoria Pirates sent the Hawaiian Islanders to their ninth consecutive loss, 64-50, last night in an arenafootball2 game at the Blaisdell Arena.

Cornell Craig caught five passes for 123 yards and three touchdowns for Peoria (8-2), which overcame a 35-21 second-quarter deficit to win its sixth game in a row.

Darnell Arceneaux completed 12-of-25 passes for 190 yards and three touchdowns for the Islanders (1-9).

Peoria, which scored a touchdown and a safety in the closing 14 seconds of the half, scored on all five of its second-half possessions.

The Pirates took the lead for good when Church threw a 44-yard TD pass to Jerome Hurd with 4:42 left in the third quarter to put Peoria ahead 44-38.

SAILING

UH has All-Americans: University of Hawai'i freshman Bryan Lake (skipper) and sophomore Jennifer Warnock (crew) were named to the 2002 Intercollegiate Sailing Association/Ronstan All-America Team.

Lake and Warnock won the A Division at the ICSA/Gill North American Dinghy Championship, which ended Friday at Ke'ehi Lagoon. Their 18-race total of 80 points was 32 better than their nearest competition. They helped the Rainbows to a third-place team finish, behind St. Mary's (Md.) and Harvard.

Hawai'i played host to the three national regattas for the first time the past two weeks. It finished second in the women's championship and fifth in the team. The third-place coed finish tied its best previous result. UH was also third in 1993 with All-Americans Jeff Olson, Morgan Larson and John Myrdal — a 2000 Olympian.

Harvard won the Fowle Trophy as the top school at the nationals this year. Harvard senior Sean Doyle was named College Sailor of the Year.

Ke'ehi Lagoon's 80-degree air and water temperatures were popular with competitors and spectators, who were in Boston last year.

"Hawai'i did a great job running the regatta," ICSA President Mitch Brindley said. "It was an exciting championship."

GOLF

Kaua'i Publinks qualifier: Jonathan Ota shot 70-71—141 to claim medalist honors in the Kaua'i Section Public Links qualifier yesterday at the par-72 Wailua Golf Course.

Ota declined the trip to the U.S. National Public Links tournament, July 15-20, at Washington, Mich.

Shannon Sibayan, who finished second with 70-72, will represent Kaua'i at the nationals.
