• How the Hawaiian Humane Society handled the media attention surrounding Hokget, the dog eventually rescued off a derelict ship, will be the focus of a meeting Wednesday of the INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF BUSINESS COMMUNICATIONS, local chapter. • Andrew Hashimoto, who returned to Hawai'i as new dean of the University of Hawai'i, College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources — the only public source of agricultural research in the state, but which has has lost 110 positions and $5 million in budgeting in the past five years — will discuss his visions for the future in an upcoming speech. His address, "AN AGRICULTURAL REVOLUTION IN HAWAI'I'S BACK YARD," is one of a continuing series of discussions on Hawai'i's transition to a new global economy, sponsored by the Hawai'i Society of Corporate Planners. In the speech, Hashimoto is expected to discuss the larger role diversified agriculture must play in the economy, and how Hawai'i can capitalize on the state's unique market cachet.
