It promises to be quite a day at the beach this August, when the postage stamp image of Hawai'i's most famous waterman is unveiled at a most appropriate spot.

The U.S. Postal Service has planned a first day issuance ceremony for the new Duke Kahanamoku stamp on Aug. 24, the surf legend's 112th birthday.
The new Duke Kahanamoku stamp will be unveiled in Waikiki on the surf legend's birthday.
The ceremony is scheduled for the beach at Hilton Hawaiian Village, near where Kahanamoku grew up. The voyaging canoe Hokule'a is to carry the stamp into Waikiki.
The stamp featuring Kahanamoku standing along Waikiki Beach with Diamond Head in the background will be available in Waikiki on Aug. 24h, with nationwide sales to follow two days later.
Kahanamoku was a four-time Olympic swimming medalist and is widely considered the father of international surfing.
After years of lobbying, the Postal Service announced the approval of the "Duke stamp" last year.
