High schools may adopt new rules in volleyball

Advertiser Staff

High school volleyball in Hawai'i will follow the college game in several aspects if administrators approve a proposal passed out of committee at the annual meeting of athletic directors yesterday in Lihu'e.

Rally scoring, best-of-five-game matches, use of the libero position and net serves would become part of the rules. In addition, pool play would be dropped from state tournaments and they would follow the 12-school formats of other team sports, with four league champions getting first-round byes and a single loss eliminating a team from championship contention.

The general assembly of the Hawai'i Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association, representing 79 high schools, will vote on the proposals tomorrow. If approved tomorrow, the changes will go to the five principals who make up the Hawai'i High School Athletic Association's executive board at their meeting in Hilo on June 19.

Some of the other proposals that will go to the floor tomorrow are adding judo as the state's 17th championship sport; creating a committee to explore classification in state championship tournaments for all sports, based on enrollment; and moving tennis and golf seasons from spring to fall.

Adding a small-school football tournament of five teams for a one-year trial was held in committee for further discussion and vote today.
