Hawai'i's Michelle Wie and Stephanie Kono, two of four 12-year-olds in the field, failed to qualify for the U.S. Women's Open yesterday in sectional qualifying at Valencia, Calif.
Wie had the lowest score among the preteens, shooting 74-79 for a 9-over-par 153 total at Valencia Country Club. She later missed an alternate berth during a playoff.
Kono shot 77-78155. The other 12-year-olds were Esther Choe (155) of La Quinta, Calif., and Mina Harigae (168) of Monterey, Calif.
Three other golfers from Hawai'i were among the 60 golfers shooting for one of five berths to the U.S. Women's Open. They were: Amanda Wilson (82-76), Dawn Kaneshiro (81-81) and Desiree Ting (80-84).
Jody Anschutz of Rio Verde, Ariz., and Jimin Kang of South Korea tied for low medalist honors at 1-over 145. Sue Daniels of Tahoe City, Calif., shot 148 and Soo-Young Moon of South Korea 150. The fifth spot was still undecided because of an ongoing playoff.
