Punahou student Rachel Borg enjoys designing and sewing her own clothes and she's always on the lookout for the latest trends.

What she chose: A turquoise necklace.

Q. Why did you choose this look?

A. "I've always had a fondness for turquoise and I've recently been seeing it around a lot."

Q. What features do you love?

A. "I love the color and the unevenness of the stones. It's a little clunky but you can pull it off."

Q. Where did you first see the trend?

A. "I've been seeing it everywhere — in magazines and on TV. Bev Creamer, the mother of a friend (and a reporter at The Advertiser), creates bead jewelry and I saw turquoise in one of her pieces."

Q. Where did you find it?

A. "My mom found it in Chinatown."

Q. What would you wear it with?

A. "It's best with solid dark colors or white. I wouldn't wear turquoise with anything too bright or patterned because it would take away from the color of the stone."

Q. Where would you wear it?

A. "Anywhere, but it's a little dressy for the mall or the beach."

Q. What's a no-no?

A. "If someone were wearing plaid with it. Also, men shouldn't wear it. I saw a picture of Justin Timberlake wearing turquoise, and it didn't look right."
