Awards

History Day honorees

The Hawai'i Council for the Humanities awarded the seventh annual Hawai'i History Day Outstanding Teacher Awards to Sarah E. Fincke of Kalaheo High School and Helen Kobayashi of Waiakea High.

Fincke and Kobayashi were recognized for their longtime support of Hawai'i History Day and for inspiring their students to excel in history studies. Each received an engraved koa plaque.

The event was held at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa and is a program of the Hawai'i Council for the Humanities.

Other awards at the program were presented by:

• Hawai'i Pacific University: Blake Kurisu, Waiakea High; and Sharmaine Saguibo, Danialle Calaustro and Shanay Coloma, Waialua High.

• Brigham Young UNIVERSITY HAWAII CAMPUS: Jhonavie Ganir and Roniza Gonsalvez, both of Maui High.

• Chaminade University: Brennan Takayama, Waiakea High.

• The Alexander and Baldwin Foundation: junior division, Kendra Ching, Kahuku Intermediate; senior division, Mason Suga, Waiakea High.

• The Hawai'i Labor Heritage Council: Nicole Vierra, Jennifer Lim and Michael Ganoot, all of Waipahu High; Ryan Bruno, Matthew Menor and Brandon Sakata, all of Waialua High, and Jason Bilong, Lahaina Intermediate.

• The Hawai'i Association of School Librarians: junior division, Leah Cabanero and Dominique Dacanay, Waipahu Intermediate; and senior division, Joseph Graham, Lorinda Dalipe and Ryan Mesina, Waipahu High.

• The Center for Oral History, University of Hawai'i at MAnoa: junior division, Valerie Mencias, Waipahu Intermediate; senior division, Jason Baum and Marrianne Sioson.

• Bishop Museum: the Mary Kawena Pukui Award, Sean Jung and Joshua Kitano, Kapunahala Elementary; and Nicole Vierra, Jennifer Lim and Michael Ganoot, all of Waipahu High.

• Native Books, Inc.: junior division, Travis Nakagawa, Waialua Intermediate; Whitney Wagner, Hilo Intermediate; senior division, Heather Asato, Tiffany Yabuta and Traci Yamashita, all of Waiakea High.

• The Sons and Daughters of the 100th Infantry Battalion: For World War II history, to Carly Munekiyo, Baldwin High; Pea Baldovi, Beverly Nabuo and Lorraine Pascual, Moanalua High; and Kristie Campbell and Trevor Duarte, Hawai'i Baptist Academy.
