Retired officer dies at Maui roadwork site

A 54-year-old retired police sergeant was killed early today on Maui when he was struck by a pickup truck while directing traffic at a highway-widening project.

Police identified the victim as Antonio A. Funes of Wailuku. He had been hired to direct traffic during paving work on the Honoa pi'ilani Highway widening project.

At 2:46 a.m., Funes was struck by a 2002 Chevy S-10 pickup driven by a 56-year-old Lahaina man, police said. The accident happened just north of the highway junction with North Kihei Road.

The 56-year-old driver, Bruce B. Mauvais of Lahaina, was charged with first-degree negligent homicide and is being held in lieu of $5,000 bail. Traffic investigators have not determined whether speed, alcohol or drug use were factors in the accident. Police said Funes was wearing high-visibility clothing and white gloves and was using a flashing light to direct traffic when he was hit.

Funes was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 5:48 a.m.

He had been retired since 1997, after 22 years with the Maui Police Department.

The death was Maui County's fourth traffic fatality this year, compared with nine at this time last year.
