In a move to boost Japanese tourism, the Guam Visitor Bureau is working out terms with the Bank of Guam for a $6 million loan it will use for marketing, including distributing vacation dollars to mostly Japanese tourists.
Spending Plan
The Guam legislature in an effort to support more focused marketing strategies for Guam's primary visitor market of Japan recently passed a bill mandating the bureau borrow the money for marketing.
The law directs the visitors bureau to spend up to:
$5.3 million to promote Guam to specific segments of the Japan tourism market, including: $3.05 million for the wedding market; $748,000 for "office ladies"; $850,000 for group visitors; and $652,000 for the family market.
$700,000 to promote Guam in South Korea.
As with other locations, including Hawai'i, Guam continues to see fewer Japanese visitors since Sept. 11.
Visitor arrivals to Guam from Japan were down 35 percent in January, 29 percent in February, 21 percent in March, and 31 percent in April, compared to the same months last year.
Overall, Guam welcomed 28 percent fewer visitors in April, down to 75,597 from 104,726 in April 2001.
