Lambert-LeGrande beats Metzger-Wong on beach

The eighth-seeded pro beach volleyball team of Mike Lambert and Lee LeGrande beat top seeds Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong, 21-15, 23-21, 15-13, yesterday in the quarterfinals of the AVP Michelob Light Santa Barbara Open.

All four players are Punahou School graduates.

Lambert and LeGrande will play fifth seeds Karch Kiraly and Brent Doble in a semifinal match today.

Second seeds Eric Fonoimoana and Dax Holdren play sixth seeds Eduardo Bacil and Frederico Souza in the other semifinal.

In other main-draw, first-round matches involving players with Hawai'i ties:

Scott Lane/Alika Williams, Hilo, Hi. (16th seeds) def. Nick Hannemann/Jason Ring, ex-Rainbow (17), 19-21, 21-15 and 15-7 (53 minutes); Scott Ayakatubby/Casey Jennings def. John Anselmo/Scott Wong, Pearl City, Hi. (26), 21-13 and 23-21 (44); Pat Keller/Marla O'Hara (17) def. Tanya Fuamatu, Waipahu, Hi./Heidi Ilustre, Honolulu (16), 21-10 and 21-18 (40); Danalee Bragado, Punahou grad/Monique Oliver def. Cary Wendell/Ali Wood (11), 21-15 and 21-19 (44); Angie Akers/Jen Pavley (23) def. Gracie Santana-Baeni/Lia Young, Honolulu (10), 21-19 and 21-18 (42). Also, Katy Eldridge/Jennifer Meredith (6) def. The AVP Michelob Light Santa Barbara Open is the third stop on the 2002 AVP Tour.

• U.S. falls to Russia again: For the third straight match, Russia had little trouble with the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team, posting a 25-14, 25-16, 25-20 win last night in Tula, Russia.

Former University of Hawai'i stars Heather Bown and Therese Crawford led the U.S. team. Bown had eight points (seven kills, one block) and Crawford had six (six kills).

The U.S. team played without Stanford All-America outside hitter Logan Tom, who returned home early to attend the 26th Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year Awards Dinner tomorrow night in Dallas, Texas. Tom is one of 12 candidates nominated for the award.
