The state Tourism Authority will team up with the Maui Office of Economic Development to present a set of three workshops, beginning today on Maui, on a new state/county cooperation to improve tourism including agrotourism, cultural tourism, ecotourism, educational tourism, health and wellness tourism, and technotourism. The County Product Enrichment Program aims for more efficient use of state and county tourism money, and closer "home rule." Honolulu's historic Stagenwald Building and the Pan-Am Building, one-time headquarters for Pan American Airlines, are among six buildings in competition for this year's Hale Po'okele Award from the Building Owners and Manager Association of Honolulu. The award recognizes quality in office buildings and management, including tenant relations programs, emergency evacuation procedures, janitorial and landscape maintenance. How three cities Chattanooga, Tenn; Portland, Ore.; and Suisun City, Calif. revitalized themselves using architecture and planning to restore a "sense of community," improve livability and enhance economic viability, will be the focus of a film Thursday kicking off 2002 Architecture Week in Hawai'i. The film, scheduled for a 6 p.m. reception and 7 p.m. screening, at Honolulu Academy of Arts, is the first in a 10-day series of events on O'ahu and Kaua'i focusing on "Sustainability and Renewal," architectural-driven improvements to a community's "built environment." Also scheduled is a one-on-one "Chat with an Architect" event, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Kahala Mall; and noon to 1 p.m. June 28 at Tamarind Park, Bishop Square, downtown.
