Two UH football games on ESPN

Advertiser Staff

ESPN will televise at least two University of Hawai'i football games and six Fresno State games this season, the Western Athletic Conference announced yesterday.

Under terms of the two-year-old WAC contract with ESPN, the network is obligated to show at least four games involving conference members. This year at least eight games are scheduled.

This is in addition to the Dec. 25 Hawai'i Bowl and Dec. 31 Humanitarian Bowl, which will both feature WAC teams. Those games do not count against the conference minimum.

The Sept. 6 UH game at Brigham Young will be shown on ESPN and the Oct. 25 game at Fresno State on ESPN2.

A WAC official said it was "likely" a UH game against Alabama on Nov. 30 would also be shown once the schools sign contracts. Alabama is expected to replace Washington State for the game at Aloha Stadium.

Also advancing were Wai'anae's Walter Elvis Salas Jr. and Mark Mareko from Hawai'i Youth.

Battease defeated Juan Baltierrez from the Upper Midwest by decision in a 119-pound bout. Phillips (132 pounds) beat Lance Williams of Iowa when the referee stopped the contest in the second round. Salas beat Jason Garvey of Syracuse when the referee stopped the bout in the second round.

Mareko (201) advanced with a bye.

In another preliminary bout, Ryan Schmidt of Michigan defeated Nicholas Gersaba of Kailua, Kona by decision in the 106-pound class.
