Kailua board elects officers

The Kailua Neighborhood Board has re-elected Faith Evans to her fourth term as chairwoman. Evans has served the board for seven years.

Other officers are Kathy Bryant-Hunter, vice chairwoman; and Jim Corcoran, secretary.

Committee chairmen are Duane Samson, Parks & Recreation; Charles Prentiss, Capital Improvement, Planning & Zoning; Donna Wong, Environment; Kathy Bryant-Hunter, Transportation; and Jon Chinen, Government & Community Services.

Water-quality projects urged

The Ala Wai Watershed Association is requesting proposals for projects to improve water quality in the Ala Wai Canal and the near-shore waters of Ala Moana and Waikiki.

The association is a community-led group with federal Environmental Protection Agency and state money to promote watershed stewardship and improve water quality in the Ala Wai Canal. The watershed includes all of the land area that drains into the canal, the near-shore waters and the submerged lands extending to and including the reef.

Through its Community Projects Program, the association has set aside $350,000 for community initiatives and projects related to water quality improvement. For more information, call 955-7882.


Six acres scorched at training range

Military and civilian firefighters fought a stubborn brushfire yesterday in a training range near the base of the Wai'anae Range at Schofield Barracks.

The blaze, which burned six acres yesterday morning in the range's impact area, started late Sunday night while soldiers with the 25th Infantry Division (Light) practiced firing 81 mm mortars, said Capt. Stacy Bathrick, an Army spokeswoman.


Talks too slow for hotel workers

Local 5 of the Hotel Employees & Restaurant Employees Union will hold a march through the streets of Waikiki at 4 p.m. today to show their displeasure with slow contract negotiations.

About 5,000 hotel workers are covered by contracts between Local 5 and the four Sheraton Waikiki hotels, the Hilton Hawaiian Village, the Hyatt Regency Waikiki and the Renaissance 'Ilikai Waikiki.

Session for teen girls tomorrow

A daylong workshop for girls 12-17 — "Survivor: Break Through 2002" — is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow at the Winners' Camp on Kamehame Ridge in Hawai'i Kai.

The session will include a seminar with Winners' Camp founder Delorese Gregoire. She will conduct activities that will touch on personal responsibility, self-empowerment, building confidence and the power of choice for girls.
