Mililani's Broadus going to Nebraska junior college

Advertiser Staff Writer

All-state boys basketball player Rashaun Broadus of Mililani High has signed an agreement for a full scholarship with Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff, Neb.

Western Nebraska coach Trace Bevell said yesterday that he had signed Broadus on the recommendation of University of Hawai'i assistant coach Jackson Wheeler.

"I'm looking to play at UH eventually," Broadus said. "Right now, I'm just happy I got this chance to play."

Broadus signed early with Western Washington, but his scholarship was canceled because he did not qualify academically.

Bevell said: "If he's as good as he is cracked up to be, he will play a lot for us. We have eight players returning from last season, but we're missing a guard."

Broadus, who stands 6 feet, averaged 17.1 points per game for Mililani and was a dazzling crowd-pleaser who scored on "explosive drives, long-range jump shots or even high-flying dunks," Advertiser reporter Wes Nakama wrote in the all-state story.

"He was virtually unstoppable in the open court because of his superb quickness," Nakama wrote.

Western Nebraska has qualified for the National Junior College Athletic Association championship tournament the last nine years and boasts an impressive alumni list, including Bobby Jackson of the Sacramento Kings, Bevell said.

There were two other seniors, both from Kalaheo High, on this year's all-state first team. Ikaika Alama-Francis said Monday he has turned down four scholarship offers and will walk on at the University of Hawai'i and DC Daniels accepted a full scholarship at Kankakee Community College (Ill.).

Broadus will leave for Nebraska Aug. 14. Before he moved to Hawai'i four years ago, he lived in Kansas and played in AAU games in Nebraska, so he knows the territory, he said.
