ISLE FILE
UH assistant Rigot a finalist at Kentucky

Advertiser Staff

Scott Rigot, an assistant coach for the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team, is a finalist for a similar position at perennial national power Kentucky.

Rigot was in Lexington, Ky., last weekend to interview with Kentucky head coach Tubby Smith for a vacant assistant coach's position.

"I worked with Tubby when I was at South Carolina, so we know each other and that made the interview comfortable for the both of us, I think," Rigot said. "It would be tough to leave Hawai'i because I love it here. But Kentucky is a program with so much history."

Rigot said the Kentucky position is offering an annual salary between $115,000 and $120,000. For the past three seasons at UH, Rigot has made approximately $65,000 per year.

Rigot played a crucial role in UH's success the past two seasons because of his ability to recruit international players. Among the players he has recruited are Predrag Savovic, Carl English, Phil Martin and Haim Shimonovich.

Prior to joining Riley Wallace's staff at UH in 1999, Rigot was an assistant coach at Alabama-Birmingham.

BOXING

• Four advance: Kimi Sofa Jr. of Wai'anae and Shawn Boyles of Waimanalo advanced in preliminary competition at the National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions yesterday at Denver.

Sofa defeated Rickey Torres of Ohio when the referee stopped the contest in the second round in a 112-pound bout. Boyles (178) won on a medical disqualification.

John Phillips of Wahiawa (139) and Peter Costa Jr. (156) of Waimanalo advanced with byes.

PARKING

• Aloha Stadium fees to increase: The Stadium Authority will be increasing the parking fee for passenger vehicles at Aloha Stadium. The new fee is $5, up from $3. The fee for commercial buses and trucks goes up from $10 to $15.

The rate increase, effective July 19, is for all events in the stadium except for high school and grade school events, where the fee remains $2.

This is the first increase since 1985 and will be used to offset rising maintenance and repair costs of the parking lot at Aloha Stadium.
