Fire displaces Kane'ohe family

Six adults and one 5-year-old child are homeless today after a fire destroyed their house in Kane‘ohe.

Firefighters were summoned at 10:40 a.m. to the blaze at 45-513 Kapalai Road. A second alarm sounded at 10:44 a.m., with a total of seven companies responding.

The fire was brought under control quickly, but the single-story structure was already gutted, said Battalion Chief Doug Hooper.

The American Red Cross was called to provide shelter for the residents, Hooper said.

The fire started in the bedroom, said fire Capt. Richard Soo, but the cause of the fire was under investigation yesterday. Damages were estimated at $140,000 to the building, $25,000 to its contents.

School break-in suspect arrested

Police arrested a 39-year-old man and are looking for others involved in a break-in at Central Intermediate School early yesterday.

A witness heard banging noises at 3:38 a.m. and called police. He told police he then saw men running from one building to another.

Officers arrived and arrested one man as he left the second building. Both buildings showed signs of forced entry, said police, who found many unopened packs of cigarettes scattered inside the second building.

Waimanalo man held in burglary

Tips generated by the CrimeStoppers program Wednesday led to the arrest of a man wanted for questioning in the burglary of a Leeward O'ahu business.

Alexander Simeona, 23, was arrested at Huli Street in Waimanalo. Police said tips had alerted them to his whereabouts and to a change in appearance.

Simeona was arrested on two state Department of Public Safety warrants and has prior convictions for burglary and auto theft.
