Volleyball scoring to stay, but pool play is ruled out

Hawai'i will not be ahead of the high-school curve on volleyball scoring after all.

The executive board of the Hawai'i High School Athletic Association turned down a recommendation from the state's athletic directors to adopt rules similar to the intercollegiate and international game.

The proposed rules would have changed state tournament play to rally scoring and best-of-five-game matches, added the libero position and allowed let serves.

Instead, the board voted to continue using National High School Federation rules of traditional side-out scoring and best-of-three matches. "When the national changes, we'll change," said Roy Fujimoto, executive secretary of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation. "We would have had to go to national for approval anyway."

The principals did go along with the ADs' recommendation to eliminate pool play from the state volleyball tournaments, however. Volleyball will be played as other team tournaments — 12 teams, first-round byes for four of the five league champions, and single-elimination from the championship bracket.

The board also delayed for one year moving the state boys golf tournament to the fall, as recommended in a 36-27 vote of ADs on June 11. "We need time to work it out with the golf courses, instead of just saying we're coming this fall," Fujimoto said.

Judo was approved as the 17th state championship sport, with tournaments for boys and girls next spring.

Recommendations to have committees study pole vaulting safety and the feasibility of a small-schools football tournament were approved.

So was a recommended ban on uniforms with bare or open midriffs — for girls or boys — in state tennis tournaments.

The board, whose voters are a principal from each of the state's five leagues, met Wednesday at Radford High School.
