Hawai'i boxers ousted in quarters

Hawai'i boxers Kini Sofa and Carl Phillips Jr. lost their quarterfinal bouts and were eliminated from the National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions yesterday in Denver.

Sofa, of Wai'anae, lost to top-ranked Ron Siler, of Cincinnati, when the referee stopped the fight in the second round of their 112-pound bout.

Phillips, of Wahiawa, lost a 3-2 split decision to No. 2 ranked Lorenzo Reynolds of Michigan at 132 pounds.

SOCCER

• Women at nationals: Two women's teams from Hawai'i are competing in the National Veterans' Cup that runs through Sunday in Beckley, W.Va.

He Kini Popo, a team of players over 40 years old, and Hawaii Five-O, an over- 50 team, are select teams from the Women's Island Soccer Association (WISA).

There are 57 teams participating in this year's tournament.

TENNIS

• New at Orchid: Brendan Curry and Allan Otvos have been appointed to the staff at Orchid at Mauna Lani. They will assist director of tennis Richard Stumpf.

Otvos has been a certified professional since 1977. He owned and operated Watergate Sports, Ltd., in the San Francisco bay area. In 1986, he became head pro at the Keauhou Beach Hotel.

For the past 12 years, Curry, from South Africa, has played professionally and trained players. His highest ranking was No. 160 in doubles and 410 in singles.
