Man shot after attacking police

A police officer shot a Kailua man early today after the man attacked him with a 5-foot pipe, authorities said.

The 30-year-old man, who had been released from prison Tuesday, faces charges of attempted murder, police said.

According to Police Chief Lee Donohue, two Kailua officers responded to a report shortly after 2 a.m. today that a man was on a rampage and breaking up his home.

Donohue said when the first officer arrived, the suspect approached the officer's sports utility vehicle and began smashing it with the pipe, breaking car windows and damaging the passenger side of the vehicle.

The 33-year-old officer, an 11-year veteran, drove away to a safe distance. He received minor cuts from that attack.

When the second officer arrived, the man speared the passenger window of his vehicle with the pipe, "and then continued thrusting the pipe through the window at the officer," Donohue said.

Donohue said second officer, a 12-year veteran, fired two shots, one of which hit the man, who was arrested and taken to The Queen's Medical Center. The man was listed in stable condition this afternoon.

The second officer, age 36, was not injured.

"After reviewing all the facts that we have in this case, it appears that the shooting was justified," Donohue said. He said the officer who shot the man has been placed on administrative leave.

In addition to first-degree attempted murder, the wounded man faces charges of first-degree terroristic threatening and property damage charges.

According to police records, the man had served prison time for robbery and criminal property damage. His record includes several assault convictions, including two for misdemeanor assault on police officers.
