Author to speak at Torah study

Richard Elliott Friedman will be the featured speaker at today's 9 a.m. Torah study session and 4 p.m. lecture at Temple Emanu-El, 2550 Pali Highway.

The free talks feature Friedman, the author of the best-selling "Who Wrote the Bible?" who is a professor of Hebrew and comparative literature at the University of California, San Diego.

The Torah study session at the Jewish temple will take place in the Weinberg Learning Center.

Surfing contest to raise money

The fourth annual Christian Surfers Hawaii Amateur Surf Contest has been set for July 13-14 at Waikiki's Queen Surf Beach.

The contest is the largest fund-raiser by the Christian Surfers Hawaii organization. Proceeds benefit the group's New Start Ministries in area prisons and youth detention centers.

To enter, participants must submit a $30-$50 fee and 25 pounds of nonperishable food. Only 250 people will be permitted to compete. Entry forms are available surf shops or by calling Joey Akaka, 306-0297 or Kalani Whitford, 672-6932.
