Apparent drowning at Hanauma Bay

A woman died in an apparent drowning yesterday at Hanauma Bay.

It was at least the fifth drowning this year at the popular spot.

The woman was found unresponsive and floating 50 yards offshore just before 1:50 p.m., police said. She was brought to shore and rushed to The Queen's Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Police said the woman was in her 30s or 40s and did not have identification.

Man arrested in school break-in

Police arrested a 39-year-old man and are looking for others involved in a break-in at Central Intermediate School early Thursday.

A witness heard banging noises at 3:38 a.m. and called police. He told police he then saw men running from one building to another.

Officers arrived and arrested one man. Both buildings showed signs of forced entry, police said.

Volunteers to issue parking citations

Big Island police are putting together a volunteer crew deputized as officers to cite people who park illegally in stalls for the disabled.

As part of a pilot program, the volunteers will enforce disabled-parking laws throughout South Hilo and Kona.
