Childcare symposium promotes peace

More than 30 years ago, three Japanese leaders in business, medicine and the arts saw a need to counteract the effects of an ever more materialistic world on the hearts and minds of young children and their families.
Their efforts grew into a movement to nurture warmheartedness, and the University of Hawai'i has embraced its idea of promoting peace, especially in the wake of Sept. 11. That's why UH has partnered with the Aprica Childcare Institute of Osaka for the second annual childcare symposium, "Raising Warmhearted Children in a Peaceful World," tomorrow through Wednesday at East-West Center.
The symposium will encourage parents, teachers, social workers, health professionals and others to think globally about childcare and health development. The keynote speaker is Jim Greenman, a childcare expert and author of "What Happened to the World?"
Registration is $125. For information, call 734-9211.
