Graham Salisbury, island-born writer of juvenile fiction, has received the 2002 Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for Excellence in Children's Literature for his novel for young adults, "Lord of the Deep." ... Hawai'i writer, teacher, photographer and publisher Jim Rizzuto, of Waimea on the Big Island, has been honored with a blue ribbon by the Outdoor Writers Association of American for his magazine story "2,000-pound Marlin," published in Sport Fishing magazine. Rizzuto has long written columns on fishing for West Hawaii Today and Hawaii Fishing News.
These just out: "Kimo: A Collection of Short Stories," by longtime surfer Kimo Hollinger of Waialua, (Anoai Press, paper, $14.95); unvarnished tales told by an elder well-known in North Shore lineups. ... Also, lots of new nonfiction about island flora and fauna, in paperback from from Mutual Publishing, including "Sharks and Rays of Hawai'i" by Gerald L. Crow and Jennifer Crites, "Surgeonfishes of Hawai'i and the World" by John E. Randall, "Hawai'i's Butterflies and Moths: An Identification Guide to Easily Observed Species" by Dean Jamieson and Jim Denny, "Hanauma Bay: a Marine Life Guide to Hawai'i's Most Popular Nature Preserve" by John P. Hoover.
Expect to hear about: "The Territory of Men: A Memoir," by Joelle Fraser (Villard, hardback, $22.95). In the '60s and '70s, Fraser bounced between the island home of her writer father (Ken Goring, author of "Here Today, Gone to Maui") and the California pads of her much-married flower-child mother, and she has the psychological scars to prove it. The book will be released in mid-July but the buzz has already begun.
Maui Writers Conference: Although the 2002 Maui Writers Conference is planned for Aug. 29-Sept. 2, this is just about the last minute to register and land a hotel room for that weekend in Wailea. The early registration deadline already has passed and the Outrigger Wailea routinely books up entirely for the weekend. Check the Web site for complete details: www.mauiwriters.com or phone (888) 974-8373 to receive a conference brochure. E-mail: writers@maui.net.
Make tracks!: Tracks are the theme of the state public library system's 2002 Children's Summer Reading Program, happening now. Children can pick up a list of recommended books at any library and read as many as possible by July 13 and get incentives.
Correction: Jim Rizzuto has been honored by the Outdoor Writers Association of America for his writing on sports fishing in Hawai'i. An incorrect name appeared in a previous version of this story.
