FUN HOUSE
Lemonade stand sparks beginning of Economics 101

Children learn about the world from listening to us adults. We never realized this more than when our daughter, 6, recently decided it would be a good idea to put up a lemonade stand in front of the house to try to raise some pocket money.

When she asked her older brother to create the price sign, she asked him to write, "Lemonade: Free!"

"How is she going to make any money?" he asked. I shrugged.

One of her playmates soon came along to get a drink.

She handed him a glass.

Then she held out her hand and said, "25 cents, please."

"But the sign said the lemonade was free!" he said.

"The lemonade is free," my daughter said. "But you have to pay for my rent and insurance."
