The 30-year-old man, who had been paroled from prison Tuesday, faces charges of attempted murder, police said.

According to Police Chief Lee Donohue, two Kailua officers responded to a report shortly after 2 a.m. yesterday that a man was on a rampage at his home on Kalolina Street.

Donohue said when the first officer arrived, the suspect approached the officer's car and began smashing it with the pipe, breaking windows and damaging the passenger side of the vehicle.

The officer drove away to a safe distance. He sustained minor cuts.

When the second officer arrived, the man speared the passenger window of his vehicle with the pipe "and then continued thrusting the pipe through the window at the officer," Donohue said.

Donohue said the second officer fired two shots, hitting the man once. The man was arrested and taken to The Queen's Medical Center, where he was reported in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the stomach last night.

The second officer was not injured.

"After reviewing all the facts that we have in this case, it appears that the shooting was justified," Donohue said. He said the officer who shot the man has been placed on administrative leave.

In addition to first-degree attempted murder, the wounded man faces charges of first-degree terroristic threatening and property damage.

According to police records, the man had served prison time for robbery and criminal property damage. His record includes several assault convictions, including two for misdemeanor assault on police officers.
