LEEWARD

Nanakuli fire injures resident

Firefighters were battling a house fire last night that caused the roof of a single-story home in Nanakuli to collapse, leaving at least one person injured.

The Fire Department sent out seven engines and 28 firefighters to the 9:36 p.m. alarm at 87-1535 Kapiki Road, said an HFD official.

No other details were available.


HONOLULU

Golf course closing for work

The Ala Wai Golf Course Driving Range will be closed tomorrow through Wednesday while the city replaces some golf course paths.

Work will include removing the asphalt cart path in back of the hitting stalls and replacing it with concrete.

Beach brunch scheduled

The city's monthly Brunch on the Beach will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today along Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki.

Scrip sales begin at 8:30 a.m. for food booths.

Music will be provided by the Honolulu Community Band, 'Ale'a and Honolulu the Band.

Parking is available at the Waikiki Trade Center for $1 and at the Waikiki Shopping Plaza for $2 for the day. Admission to the brunch is free.


Small claims seminar on tap

A free seminar, "Small Claims," is at noon Wednesday in the Supreme Court conference room, on the second floor of Ali'iolani Hale, 417 S. King St.

District Court Judge David Lo will explain the process of filing a small claims case and describe what happens when parties go to court. Small claims are disputes in which the total amount of a claim is less than $3,500.

The seminar is part of series of informational talks on specific areas of law and the courts offered by the state Judiciary.

Library prepares for programs

The Pearl City Library will hold four free Wednesday afternoon programs in conjunction with its 2002 Children's Summer Reading Program.

All programs will begin at 3 p.m. at the library.

Wednesday, Krista Sumida of the Hawaiian Humane Society will discuss which animals make good pets.

"Rainbow Pigeons" will be presented July 3 by Doug Beter, who will talk about his rainbow-colored pigeons.

The third program, "Clothing and Tools: In The Wonderful World of Animals," will be presented July 10 by Honolulu Zoo volunteers.

And on July 17, Fred Barnett will present "The Greatest Fish Show," including the aquatic wonders of colorful fish and tide pool animals in Barnett's "touch" tanks.

Crystal meth topic of meeting

KAILUA, KONA, Hawai'i — U.S. Attorney Ed Kubo will discuss the crystal methamphetamine problem at a free public meeting Thursday sponsored by the West Hawai'i and state bar associations.

Kubo also will talk about a related federal program called Project Safe Neighborhood. The meeting starts at 4:30 p.m. at Oodles of Noodles, adjacent to the Safeway store in Kailua. For details, call Margaret Masunaga at (808) 328-2521.
