Fire breaks out in abandoned house

Eight fire companies were called shortly after 9 a.m. today to a fire that may have been purposely set in the ceiling area of an abandoned Kalihi house.

Firefighters cut through the roof of an abandoned house at the end of Umi Street in Kalhi to finish off a morning structure fire.

Crews declared the blaze under control at 9:50 a.m. at 710-B Umi St., a two-story, hollow-tile and wood house converted to commercial use, said Capt. Richard Soo, fire department spokesman.

Firefighters were concerned because the building formerly stored fireworks, Soo said, but more recently had been abandoned.

Investigators were checking into the cause of the blaze, Soo said, but it broke out in several different spots in the ceiling area, which raised the suspicion that it was intentionally set.

3rd person held in hotel robbery

Police caught the one remaining suspect at large in the armed robbery of a Japanese tourist in his Waikiki hotel room April 22.

Tucker Dee Chapman, 18, of no local address, made his first court appearance today on charges of kidnapping and first-degree robbery and burglary. He was arrested at 10:40 p.m Friday near Kapi'olani Boulevard and Sheridan Street. He was charged and is being held on $100,000 bail.

His co-defendants in the case, charged earlier, are Jolene Mattos and David Faleafine.

Police said the robbery was reported at 12:02 a.m. at the Honolulu Prince Hotel, 415 Nahua Ave. Detectives said the tourist, 38, heard a knock and opened the door to find someone he had met earlier.

When the tourist opened the door to Mattos, police said, Faleafine and Chapman allegedly forced their way in. The three allegedly fled with his belongings after they had held a gun to the victim's head and bound him with duct tape.

Hotel security caught Mattos, police said, but the two men were located during the investigation.

Wounded man still at Queen's

The Kailua man shot by police after he allegedly smashed officers' vehicles with a pipe remained in guarded condition today at The Queen's Medical Center, police said this morning.

Kailua police went to Kalolina Street after a 2 a.m. report Saturday that the suspect was on a rampage at his home. The suspect allegedly smashed both officers' cars, spearing the pipe through the window of the second vehicle. The second officer fired two shots, hitting the man once in the stomach, police said.

Man charged in assault case

A 19-year-old man has been charged with attempted assault after he drove his car at a police officer responding to a domestic abuse case June 15.

Lopaka L. Selby-Oglesby, of no local address, was about to drive away when police arrived at the parking lot at 87-182 Helelua St. in Nanakuli at 12:20 a.m.

His 19-year-old girlfriend told officers she had been assaulted, and when officers approached his car, Selby-Oglesby allegedly reversed the car and then drove directly at an officer, who jumped out of the way.

Selby-Oglesby was arrested Saturday in Wahiawa and charged with second-degree assault, for which he is being held in lieu of $15,000 bail.
