Airport smoke signals fire training exercise

Advertiser Staff

Billowing black smoke rising from the Lagoon Drive area this morning signaled only that a state firefighters training exercise was in progress.

The training takes place in a fire pit adjacent to the state’s airport crash station at the end of Lagoon Drive, said state Department of Transportation spokesperson Marilyn Kali.

The crew working each shift undergoes the training once a month, she said.

The use of diesel fuel on a training airplane fuselage to set off the fire produces large quantities of black smoke, she said, and it generated calls from many commuters today who could see the smoke from a great distance at about 9 a.m.
