Hilo educator receives award

Jeanette Wong, a teacher at Hilo High school, has been named a 2002 Coca-Cola Educator of Distinction by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. She is one of 252 educators nationwide being honored. She has received a crystal Coca-Cola bottle and a plaque inscribed with a dedication written by Emma Yuen, a 2002 Coca-Cola Scholar and Hilo High senior.

"The award represents the selfless, hard-working and sincere dedication of the educators who win it," said J. Mark Davis, president of the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. "These teachers are committed to shaping the future of America by encouraging its future leaders."


Maui principal recognized

For the past 22 years, Lindsay Ball, the principal of King Kamehameha III School on Maui, has contributed to the education and development of students in and out of the classroom as a teacher, vice principal and coach. His efforts as principal to maintain a safe learning environment for students, staff and school community have earned him a commemorative plaque and gift certificate from Hula Grill in Ka'anapali, Maui.

"Principal Ball's teaching and coaching experience enables him to effectively work with staff and students to achieve the ultimate goal, a quality education," said Orrin Cross, general manager of Hula Grill.


Scholarships, honors given

The following students have received honors or scholarships:

• Kristen McGuffin, named to the spring semester Dean's List at the University of Mobile in Alabama.

• On the honors list at the University of Missouri-Rolla are Marissa Kimura, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Kimura, political science major; Daisuke Saito, son of Mr. and Mrs. Yoshitaka Saito, a chemistry major; and Kristen Tanaka, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Tanaka, a mathematics/economics major.

• University of Michigan students: Janelle Penisten, a College of Engineering major from Hilo, Hawai'i, recipient of both University Honors and the William J. Branstrom Freshman Prize; Ashley Welton of Kailua, Kona, Hawai'i, College of Engineering; Audrey Nakamura, of Wailuku, Maui, College of Pharmacy; Sarah Grekin of Honolulu, College of Literature, Science and the Arts, recipient of University Honors also named the James B. Angell Scholar; Joseph Leblanc of Honolulu, College of Music; Andrew Estes and Catherine Goldsmith, both of Honolulu, both of College of Literature, Science and Arts; Timothy Fagan of Honolulu, College of Art & Design; Maiko Kawanishi and Kathleen Moy, both of Honolulu, both of the College of Literature, Science and Arts.

• St. Andrew's Priory School has selected this year's recipients of Queen Emma Merit Scholarships. They are seventh-graders, Kamilla Pollock of Kane'ohe and Mary-Victoria Beech, of Honolulu; also ninth-graders, Katya Ekimoto of Pearl City and Jennifer Tanaka of Kane'ohe.

• Duquesne University School of Pharmacy student, Jennifer S.Y. Ma of Honolulu has been selected to receive a Merck Company Foundation research grant for "A Study on Carbohydrate Specificity in the AraC Gene: Utilizing Small Sugar Molecules Other than L. Arabinose."

• Jessica Tram Nguyen, a student at Seattle University, has received an Exceptional Student Fellowship from The State Farm Companies Foundation.

• Two local Hanover College students were named to the Dean's List for the spring term. They are Jacqueline Imamura of Kailua, a Roosevelt High School graduate and Nicole Nakamura of Kane'ohe, a graduate of Hawaii Baptist Academy.
