Knowing may be half the battle.
But sometimes not knowing can win the race.
Outrigger's men's 35-over crew didn't realize winning its race — the final race — would give the club the overall win at the Waimanalo Canoe Club Race at Waimanalo Beach Park yesterday.
"Really? We won?" asked a surprised Marc Haine, helping load up the team's 400-pound koa canoe Kakina after the race.
"We didn't feel the pressure at all, none whatsoever," said Mark Rigg, the crew's stroker. "And I think that was good for us."
Lanikai bolted out to the lead off the starting line, but Outrigger hung close in the 1-mile race.
At the turn, Outrigger pushed ahead, taking the lead from Lanikai. Outrigger clocked in at 8 minutes, 5.92 seconds. Hui Lanakila picked up speed toward the finish line, edging out Lanikai and taking second at 8:08.82.

Girls 18-younger crews paddle in choppy surf off Waimanalo Beach Park. Waikiki Surf won the 1-mile race with a time of 5:07.59.
This crew, which also included Courtney Seto, Walter Guild, Matt Rigg and Todd Bradley, has won long-distance races for nearly 20 years. After taking a break from regattas, the crew reunited this season to compete in one of the more competitive divisions in the O'ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association (OHCRA).
The race win gave Outrigger the regatta title with 67 points, beating out Lanikai (65), Kailua (62), Hui Nalu (56), Hui Lanakila (43), Healani (38) and Keahiakahoe (19).
Waikiki Surf won the smaller A division with 23 points. Host Waimanalo finished fourth with one point.
"To win the regatta," Haine said, "that's icing."
Strong winds and choppy conditions — a typical Waimanalo Regatta — made the course more challenging and the race much longer. The regatta didn't wrap up until after 6 p.m.
Outrigger's crew is an example of how long-distance paddlers use regattas as practice for their season, which starts in September.
Healani's senior men's crew, which fell to Lanikai in the 1.5-mile race, practiced for the first time Friday. The newly assembled crew was made up of members of Team New Zealand/Hawai'i, which returned this week from the Hamilton Cup in Australia.
Three of the crew members joined Healani this week to continue training with their long-distance teammates.
"Training together in regattas will help us prepare for the long-distance season," said Healani's Bill Pratt. "A lot of paddling is just blending with each other."
The latest additions to Healani has meant serious competition for Lanikai, also a crew of long-distance paddlers.
"As long as they paddle in the regatta season, they'll be our competitors," said Lanikai's Mike Judd. "But there's a difference between clubs and teams. Teams come and go, but clubs will always stay. In that race, we didn't represent our team. We represented our entire club."
Jim Foti, a longtime regatta and distance paddler for Lanikai, welcomes the challenge.
"It's good for Healani and it's good for us," he said. "It gives us a push."
Added Pratt: "Personally, it's good for the sport. Because competition will breed better paddlers. You never know who's going to win."
The next OHCRA regatta is Thursday in Waikiki.

HUI WA'A
• Kane'ohe wins its fourth regatta: After having its winning streak snapped last week, Kane'ohe Canoe Club won its fourth regatta of the Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a season at Ke'ehi Lagoon yesterday.
Kane'ohe won seven of the 36 races, thanks to a strong youth program.
With 65 total points, Kane'ohe beat Lokahi (59), Manu O Ke Kai (42), Na Keiki O Ka Mo'i (41) and Waikiki Yacht Club (26).
Koa Kai took the smaller A division for the third week in a row with 41 points.
Lokahi's senior women extended their winning streak to 43 consecutive races. Koa Kai's men's crews dominated, winning the freshman, sophomore, senior and senior masters divisions.
The next Hui Wa'a regatta is July 1 at Ma'ili Beach.
