Kunimoto, Chun ousted in wrestling finals

Clarissa Chun of Kapolei and Katie Kunimoto of Kane'ohe fell short yesterday in their bids to make USA Wrestling's Women's World Team.

They both lost best-of-three series to the current national champions in their weights at a challenge tournament in St. Paul, Minn.

Chun lost 2-1 to Patricia Miranda of Stanford at 105.5 pounds.

Kunimoto lost two straight to Jenny Wong of Stillwater, Minn., at 112 pounds.

Chun is a 1999 Roosevelt graduate who attends Missouri Valley College. Kunimoto is a 1999 Castle graduate who attends Pacific (Ore.) University.

• Metzger, Wong win bronze: Honolulu's Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong of Pearl City split a pair of matches yesterday to capture the bronze medal for the United States at a $300,000 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event at Gstaad, Switzerland.

Mariano Baracetti and Martin Conde of Argentina won the final of the Swiss Open over Brazil's Marcio Araujo and Benjamin Insfran, 21-14 and 21-15.

• Sasada finishes tied for 37th: Makena's Brian Sasada shot a final-round 77 yesterday to finish tied for 37th at the PGA Club Professional Championship at Louisville, Ky.

He finished at 297, which was 16 strokes behind medalist Barry G. Evans. The top 25 finishers qualified for the PGA Championship.

• Valentin wins Maui event: Joey Valentin of Honolulu won the ASTON No Ka Oi longboard event yesterday at Lahaina Harbor.

In the final, Valentin beat Maui's Noah Shimabukuro, 22.5-21.5.
