Fluor Hawaii chosen for Ford Island project

The Navy has picked Fluor Hawaii LLC for master planning and development of a more than $100 million project for new housing and office space on Ford Island.

"Fluor Hawaii's proposed master plan integrates existing and planned Navy uses and includes adaptive reuses of historic buildings and venues, new and efficient administrative and training facilities, improved quality of life for Navy sailors and their families, and limited commercial development on Ford Island," the Navy said yesterday in a release.

Fluor Hawaii, a Hawai'i-based joint venture between Hawaii Renaissance Builders LLC (a subsidiary of Hunt Building Corp.) and Fluor Federal Services LLC, was one of three companies awarded $325,000 each last year to make a preliminary development of plans for Ford Island.

The competitive selection process was administered on behalf of Navy Region Hawaii by Pacific Division, Naval Facilities Engineering Command. A final plan is expected to be developed by the end of this year.

In April, the Navy selected a "medium intensity" development road map for Ford Island that calls for up to 420 family housing units, bachelor enlisted quarters for 1,000 people, 190,000 square feet of office space for 1,500 additional employees and a new training complex.

The master developer also must come up with a plan to lease or sell outlying Navy properties to finance the Ford Island project, which seeks to consolidate housing and offices in Pearl Harbor.

U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye, D-Hawai'i, yesterday commended the Navy for moving forward with the ambitious project.

"I am especially proud of this project because it employs a new business model of public-private collaboration," Inouye said. "I applaud the members of Fluor Hawaii for their spirit of cooperation and their willingness to break new ground in military development."
