Advertiser Staff

Another young female from Hawai'i has burst onto the national golf scene.

Mari Chun of Honolulu, who completed her freshman year at the Kamehameha Schools last month, won the girls title of the National Open High School Golf Championships at Orlando, Fla.

Chun shot 75, equaling the best round of the final day, to overtake Daniella Ronderos of Bradenton, Fla., who led the tournament the first two days.

Chun shot 82 on the first day, which was played in a storm with no one breaking 80, then 77 and 75 for a total of 234.

Chun earned an invitation to the Junior World Championship in December and designation as a National High School All-American. The tournament, sponsored by the National High School Coaches Association, was held June 16-19.

Chun was co-Player of the Year in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu this spring and finished fourth in the state high school championship.

Wendee Augustiro, a classmate of Chun's at Kamehameha, finished 10th at 256 (85-86-85).
