Charges sought in Waipahu heist

Detectives are seeking second-degree robbery charges against a 29-year-old man arrested after he punched an elderly woman at a Waipahu bus stop yesterday and fled with her purse.

The woman, 79, told police she was waiting for the bus at 94-695 Waipahu St. at 11 a.m. when the suspect approached and demanded money.

When the woman told him she was poor, he allegedly punched her in the face, grabbed her purse and fled. A witness told police he was in a nearby stream, where officers arrested him.

The victim was treated for a bloody nose and swollen lip.

Officer riding motorcycle hurt

A Honolulu police officer was sent to The Queen’s Medical Center today after the motorcycle he was riding hit the back of a car at the intersection of Beretania Street and Ward Avenue. The hospital would not release his condition.

Police said the incident occurred around 7:45 a.m. when a solo bike officer stopped at a red light on the west bound side of Beretania Street behind a silver V-90 Volvo.

When the light turned green, the officer pressed his gas and hit the back left side of the car.

The driver of the car, a 38-year-old woman, and a teenage passenger were not hurt..

Drugs, weapon found; 2 nabbed

Narcotics officers today arrested two Kalihi men, ages 30 and 39, for possession of drugs and weapons and are suspected of selling drugs at their home.

Police made the arrests at 6:30 a.m. at 734 Mokauea St. and confiscated small amounts of crystal methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and an electric stun gun.

Kailua drowning victim identified

Police have identified a 44-year-old man who drowned in waters off Kailua-Kona pier Sunday as Yasuji Yoshimura of Tokyo.

Investigators said Yoshimura, who had participated in a 5-kilometer run in Kailua-Kona on Saturday, had been seen snorkeling in waters off the pier before he drowned.
