Calculate workout intensity by keeping track of heart rate

By Dave Patania

Q. I am doing well with my weight training and nutrition, but feel that my aerobic work isn't helping. I walk/jog, but don't know if it is enough. What can I do?

A. The first thing you should do is purchase a heart rate monitor. It will accurately keep track of your heart rate as you exercise and keep you in a safe yet effective training zone.

I have my clients use heart rate monitors because they take the guesswork out of aerobic training and make aerobic workouts as easy to track as your meals and your strength training exercises. No matter your age or ability, you will be able to train at a planned intensity that is hard enough to ensure results, yet within a range that doesn't increase your risk of injury.

These nifty devices allow you to track and plan every aerobic session based on your needs and desired intensities. They are also great for weight-training sessions as well.

Purchase just a basic model; there is no need for all the bells and whistles unless you are a high-level or competitive athlete. I recommend the Polar A1; it costs no more than $60.

Instructions on how to calculate your heart rate and how to find the right training zones come with the device. Trust me, you will like training with a monitor. So get to it and chase your goals!
