Wounded man charged in rampage

A 30-year-old Kailua man who was shot by police on Saturday after he allegedly smashed officers' vehicles with a pipe and threatened them was charged on Monday.

Police charged Byron Almeida with first-degree attempted assault, second-degree attempted assault and two counts of first-degree criminal property damage. His bail was set at $100,000.

Kailua police responded to a report at 2 a.m. Saturday that someone was on a rampage at his home on Kalolina Street. They said Almeida smashed both officers' cars, spearing the pipe through the window of one. An officer fired two shots, hitting Almeida in the stomach, police said.

Almeida was taken to The Queen's Medical Center and released from the hospital Monday.


Hanauma victim a Japanese tourist

A woman who died in an apparent drowning Friday at Hanauma Bay has been identified as Yukiko Moriguchi, 58, of Japan, the city's medical examiner said.

The cause of Moriguchi's death is still under investigation, the medical examiner said.

Moriguchi was found unresponsive and floating 50 yards offshore just before 1:50 p.m., police said.


Kona drowning victim from Japan

KAILUA, Kona, Hawai'i — Police have identified a 44-year-old man who died Sunday while snorkeling off the Kailua, Kona pier as Yasuji Yoshimura of Tokyo.

Police said Yoshimura, who had participated in a 5-kilometer run in Kailua, Kona the previous day, was found face-down in the water. An autopsy determined that he had drowned.
