Waipahu's Viloria returns to ring July 5 in Wisconsin

Advertiser Staff

Waipahu's Brian Viloria, the World Boxing Council's Youth World flyweight champion, will return to the ring next week.

But his title will not be on the line in what his manager is calling a "showcase" fight.

Viloria will face Hugo Alberto Alvarez of Mexico in a scheduled eight-round flyweight bout on July 5 at the Menominee Casino Hotel in Keshena, Wisc. The bout will not be televised, and will be on the undercard to a Michael Grant vs. Thomas Williams main event.

"Because Brian looked so sensational in his last fight, we've been fielding a number of phone calls from promoters wanting to showcase him," said Viloria's manager, Gary Gittelsohn. "This is more of an opportunity to keep Brian busy."

Viloria, 21, improved to 8-0 on June 18 and captured the WBC youth title with a fifth-round technical knockout of Francisco Soto at Del Mar, Calif.

"Brian's wrist is a little sore, but he otherwise came out unscathed in that fight," Gittelsohn said. "This shouldn't be too quick of a turnaround. He's done it before."

Alvarez is a relatively untested professional with a record of 2-0.

"Quite frankly, he's not in Brian's class," Gittelsohn said. "From that standpoint, he's a perfect opponent for this situation."

Because Alvarez is not qualified, the WBC youth championship will not be at stake. Only the top boxers under the age of 23 can fight for the title.
