Humane society tending pet turkey

The Hawaiian Humane Society is looking for the owner of a large female turkey picked up in Kaimuki yesterday. But Humane Society spokeswoman Eve Holt said she will not release its weight or even describe how the bird looks.
"I don't want to say anything about her because I don't want people to relate her to food," Holt said. "She must be a pet turkey, and she will stay a pet turkey."
Someone called the humane society yesterday to report a turkey about the "size of a large goose" running loose in a Kaimuki yard. An investigator was sent down to capture it, Holt said.
"She's in a kennel right now," Holt said. "We'll be holding her for a reasonable amount of time, but we're hoping that someone will call or come down and claim her."
According to the animal nuisance laws, turkeys and other poultry animals are permitted in residential areas if they are properly housed in coops or cages.
During her 11 years at the Humane Society, Holt said the agency has never picked up a lost turkey.
"We have had pigs, penguins and a lot of runaway turtles," she said. "But, not a turkey."
