Police arrest man in purse robbery

Detectives are seeking second-degree robbery charges against a 29-year-old man arrested after he punched an elderly woman at a Waipahu bus stop Tuesday and fled with her purse.

The woman, 79, told police she was waiting for the bus at 94-695 Waipahu St. at 11 a.m. when the suspect approached and demanded money.

When the woman told him she was poor, he allegedly punched her in the face, grabbed her purse and fled. A witness told police he was in a nearby stream, where officers arrested him.

The victim was treated for a bloody nose and swollen lip.

Bike officer hurt after hitting auto

A Honolulu police officer was sent to The Queen's Medical Center yesterday after the motorcycle he was riding hit the back of a car at the intersection of Beretania Street and Ward Avenue. The hospital would not release his condition.

Police said the incident occurred about 7:45 a.m. when a solo bike officer stopped at a red light on the west bound side of Beretania Street behind a silver V-90 Volvo.

When the light turned green, the officer pressed his gas and hit the back left side of the car. The driver of the car, a 38-year-old woman, and a teenage passenger were not hurt.


Woman hit by car near Pearl Harbor

A 76-year-old woman was critically injured when she was struck by a car last night near Pearl Harbor.

Police said the woman was struck on Kamehameha Highway near Makalapa Gate about 6:20 p.m. Traffic investigators were at the scene of the accident last night and details were not available.

The woman was taken to The Queen's Medical Center, where she was in critical condition last night.


Kalihi men face drug, gun charges

Narcotics officers yesterday arrested two Kalihi men, ages 30 and 39, for possession of drugs and weapons and are suspected of selling drugs at their home.

Police made the arrests at 6:30 a.m. at 734 Mokauea St. and confiscated small amounts of crystal methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and an electric stun gun.


Foul play suspected in Lahaina fire

LAHAINA, Maui — Police are investigating a fire at a Lahaina restaurant yesterday that appears to have been deliberately set.

Damage from the 10:30 a.m. fire at the Lemon Grass Restaurant on Waine'e Street was estimated at $1,000, according to the Maui Department of Fire Control. Items were set ablaze on top of the stove while the restaurant was closed. The fire was extinguished at 10:47 a.m.
